I have often been asked where valentines day came from and what the meaning is behind it and for the longest time I didn't know, I think people expected me to as i'm a florist but I was always too busy on valentines to look it up!
The popular belief is that Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome in the third century AD. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he believed it made bad soldiers. Valentine felt that this was very unfair and performed marriage ceremonies in secret. He of course was found out and was then imprisoned and sentenced to death. While he was imprisoned, Valentine fell in love with the jailers daughter. The day came that Valentine was to be killed which happened to be February 14th he wrote a letter to the jailers daughter and signed it "From your Valentine".
I think this story is so sad yet so lovely and its so nice to know the reason behind this special holiday! So don't forget to tell those you love how you feel about them this Valentines day and remember to buy your flowers from a local florist!
Happy Valentines Day!!
